Hempstead High School freshman TJ Ross Jr. will participate in the Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) Educator’s Rising National Competition in June after advancing out of the virtual regional and state rounds in early March. Ross is competing in the Creative Lecturer category, where students are required to design a TED Talk around the topic Online Learning COVID Edition.
Ross said he listened to TED Talks even before he found out about the contest.
“I would watch the Talks on youtube because I find them interesting,” he said. “Once I received the topic, I talked to different adults who could provide me information on how COVID affected learning this year.”
HHS TAFE Sponsor Pamela Kepley is happy that Ross took such an interest in the contest.
“TJ worked to develop his TED Talk without receiving a great deal of help,” Pamela Kepley, HHS TAFE sponsor, said. “He had great confidence while competing even though the competition was virtual.”
Ross joined Bobcats Tanasia Ragston, Megan Grennon, Jessyka Melchor, and Haley Carter, who participated in the Bulletin Board category.
